I Already Had Braces As A Child. How is Invisalign Different For Me Now?
Having metal braces as a child or teen was an experience that you will probably never forget. Regular visits to the orthodontist for adjustments. Painful wires and bulky brackets. Having to avoid foods like popcorn and chewing gum for several years. However, in the decades since, you may have noticed that your teeth have shifted or are no longer as straight as they once were. If you’d like to have straighter teeth, but don’t wish to endure traditional braces again, you are in luck.
Many adults are once again turning to orthodontics to realign their teeth, especially Invisalign clear plastic aligners, to make their smiles stunning once again. Cosmetic dentist Dr. Marianna Farber, founder of Contemporary & Esthetic Dentistry in New York City, can attest that one is never too old to enjoy the many benefits that Invisalign offers. Read on to learn how they can help you maintain your smile for years to come.
You’ll be hard-pressed to find many men and women in the Big Apple who are excited about the prospect of sporting a mouthful of metal braces during their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond. That’s why Invisalign has become such a popular option for adults in New York City who want to have straighter teeth again. Invisalign is a comfortable and discreet alternative to its predecessor of metal braces. Made of BPA-free, clear plastic, the aligners fit directly over your upper and lower teeth. Able to straighten teeth in about half the time required by traditional metal braces, another bonus of Invisalign is that they can be removed to make brushing, flossing and eating easier.
Aligned teeth are better your health
Having teeth that are crooked and crowded can negatively impact your overall health. Brushing and flossing can be a challenge when teeth are tightly spaced. It may be difficult to remove food particles that become trapped in hard-to-reach areas of the mouth. This can lead to a build-up of plaque and tartar, the precursors of periodontal disease, and put New York City patients at an increased risk for experiencing inflammation in the body. Also, tooth decay resulting from poor oral hygiene can make root canals and other dental procedures necessary in the future.
Adults whose teeth are not straight may also suffer from frequent earaches or chronic facial pain. When the bite is misaligned, you may bite your cheeks frequently and the condition of your teeth bones may be affected. Invisalign can effectively align your bite to prevent the development of these and other conditions such as TMJ, which is characterized by headaches, jaw, and muscle pain. Expert cosmetic dentist, Dr. Farber, of Contemporary & Esthetic Dentistry in New York City, can explain how Invisalign may help patients alleviate or avoid the effects of many health issues.
Boost your self-confidence
When teeth are gapped and misaligned, or you have an overbite, it can be embarrassing for adults - so much so that your self-esteem may be impacted. This can make it difficult to enjoy life to the fullest. However, at this stage of life, you may wonder whether it is worth investing the time and money required to correct your teeth. Having confidence in your smile can make you feel better prepared to participate in social activities and take on professional challenges that you might otherwise have felt uncomfortable pursuing. A stunning smile may change your entire outlook on life!
Is Invisalign for you?
In general, Invisalign is considered a safe and effective orthodontic option for adults of all ages. A thorough examination will be performed by Dr. Farber to determine whether your teeth and gums are healthy and able to support the treatment. This is important since periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) becomes more common as we age. This and other conditions have the potential to delay some adults from becoming Invisalign patients. Any oral inflammation or infections must first be fully treated.
Unlike those of children and teens, the bones of adults have ceased growing. This means that some bite-related issues and structural changes within the jaw may be too complex to be corrected with Invisalign. In such cases, Dr. Farber will recommend alternative treatment options. However, most mild-to-moderate alignment and teeth-straightening issues can be successfully treated with Invisalign.
The process explained
Once Dr. Farber determines that you are a good candidate for clear plastic aligners, impressions of your teeth and mouth will be made. Computer software will be employed to create several sets of tight-fitting aligners. Each set is configured slightly different to apply pressure to both your upper and lower teeth. A customized treatment plan will be created and it will be explained what you should expect during each step of your journey toward a dazzling smile.
You’ll be presented with your first set of custom-crafted aligners, which must be worn nearly around the clock -- approximately 22 hours a day. Some minor discomfort may be experienced as you adjust to wearing them. A few weeks later, your next set of aligners will arrive. The idea is to move the teeth slowly and precisely into position. Regular visits to Contemporary & Esthetic Dentistry in New York City will be required so that Dr. Farber can examine your teeth, switch out your aligners, and assess your progress. Once the entire Invisalign treatment is complete, patients may need to wear a retainer to help keep the teeth correctly positioned. In most cases, Invisalign treatments require about half as long as traditional braces to improve patients’ smiles.
Accelerating the Invisalign process with Propel
For New York City patients that desire faster progress, the office of Contemporary & Esthetic Dentistry offers the VPro5 by Propel Orthodontics. This advanced orthodontic device is used by Invisalign patients for five minutes each day to help speed up and accelerate their orthodontic process. The VPro5 uses high-frequency vibrations to help position the aligners and seat them for optimal movement. Most Invisalign patients receive their new straightening trays approximately every 14 days; however, for those who also incorporate the VPro, this time can be cut in half.
