10 Tips on Getting the Most Out of Your Invisalign Treatment
Invisalign, a clear braces method for teeth straightening, is an excellent way to straighten your teeth without the hassle of traditional metal braces. The process seems simple enough, but multiple factors go into the success rate of this treatment. If you’re considering or have already decided on Invisalign, Dr. Marianna Farber with Contemporary & Esthetic Dentistry in New York City has provided several tips on getting the most out of your investment. Following these tips will help ensure you’ll end up with a beautiful, straight set of teeth.
Follow the 48-hour instruction
Each time you get a new set of aligner trays it is recommended you wear them as much as possible during the first 48 hours of use. This will allow your teeth, gums, and mouth to get use to the shape and feel of the trays. You can take your trays out to eat and then brush your teeth, but it’s suggested they go right back in, as the first 48 hours of wearing them are the most effective.
Wear the trays for 22 hours a day
It seems simple enough, but your teeth won’t get straight unless you wear your trays, and we mean wear them often. It is recommended that you wear the trays for at least 22 hours every single day. You’ll only want to remove the trays when you eat and when you brush and floss. The longer you go without your trays the longer it will take to see results.
Come to your appointments
Your Invisalign appointments at our New York City dental practice are a great time to meet with Dr. Farber and have her evaluate how your teeth are doing and if any adjustments need to be made. This is also when Dr. Farber will confirm whether or not you’re ready to move on to the next set of trays.
If you’re not one who flosses on a regular basis, now is the time to start. It’s important to thoroughly clean between your teeth every single day. Otherwise, the aligners run the risk of pushing the bacteria that’s on or between your teeth right up to the gum line where it will sit all day. This increases your chances for gum disease and you don’t want to deal with that while trying to straighten your teeth.
Change your trays on time
This is where it’s very important to listen to your dentist’s instructions. If they think you need to wear the trays for a few more days, then do so. If they suggest you move on to the next trays then don’t wait days or weeks to swap them out. Dr. Farber has your best interests in mind, so it’s always good to follow the advice of an Invisalign expert.
Don’t be afraid of the attachments
Some people are not fans of the attachments, also called buttons, but they are there for a good reason. The buttons can help keep the trays in place and prevent them from sliding off of your teeth. If the trays aren’t sitting securely on your teeth then this will also slow down the straightening process. Once you’ve completed your treatment the buttons will be removed and nobody will ever know you had them.
Most people won’t notice you’re wearing them
One of the main reasons why so many New York City area men and women opt to go with Invisalign (clear braces) is because the trays are much more visually appealing when compared to traditional braces. Although you may feel like everyone notices them, keep in mind that they are clear and do not draw attention to your mouth. There’s no need to be self-conscious about wearing the trays, and bottom line, if you don’t wear them then your teeth aren’t going to be corrected.
Know how to care for your trays
The trays are in your mouth for most of the day, so it’s important that you do a thorough job when cleaning them. One of the best ways to clean the trays is by using warm water and antibacterial soap. Invisalign also has their own products for cleaning the trays if you prefer to use theirs.
Drink lots of water
It’s recommended that you drink plenty of water while wearing the trays. Your body tends to produce extra saliva when it senses a foreign object in the mouth and you don’t want to end up dehydrated. Drinking plenty of water keeps you hydrated and also rinses out your mouth and cleans off the trays.
Keep your mouth clean
The aligners are pressed against your teeth for a majority of the day. If your teeth aren’t clean then whatever is on them is going to be trapped by the trays. Make sure you are practicing good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly. The last thing you want to experience is tooth decay or a cavity during your treatment.
