What Are Implant Overdentures?
Also known as implant-supported dentures, implant overdentures are replacement teeth that are supported by dental implants. With this procedure, two or more titanium, screw-like posts are surgically placed in your jawbone, then topped with natural-looking replacement teeth made out of porcelain.
Unlike traditional dentures, which rest on the gums and cover the roof of the mouth, implant overdentures are shaped like a “U” and secured with snap- or screw-on attachments. After a healing period, you will be left with a healthy, beautiful smile.
Removable Dentures vs. Implant Overdentures
For edentulous patients (those with complete tooth loss) historically there was only one choice—a removable denture. But in recent years, having some implant support for the denture has become the standard of care. The main advantages of implant support are comfort, security, and bone loss prevention.
While removable dentures will slip around, that will not happen with implant overdentures. This means you’ll have peace of mind, knowing your replacements are perfectly secure while you’re speaking, eating, laughing, and enjoying life. In addition, implant overdentures are easy to care for and, most importantly, they will protect you from a serious condition known as facial collapse, where the jawbone dissolves away.
