Every once in a while I get the most interesting questions. As this is the second time I’ve received this question I thought I’d address it here as well. Kendra and Lori asked if it was possible for them to just bleach their teeth with household bleach such as Clorox by swishing it on their teeth every day. Here is what I said.
Great question. Though you would think swishing bleach around your teeth would be a good way to whiten them. I am going to recommend against it. Here is why.
Household bleach is a strong base, such as lye. This is highly corrosive and also burns living tissue. That being said, dentists often use it during root canal treatments as a way of cleaning out dead organic debris after a root canal treatment. The bleach eats away the debris leaving clean canals. However, those same chemicals can do damage to the living tissue in your mouth. Another issue is if the bleach comes into contact with certain chemicals, bleach can release a toxic gas called chlorine.
In all honesty, your safest option is to have your teeth whitening done through your dentist. It is not very expensive and many dentists are willing to work with you on payments. The whitening gel your dentist will use is more effective on your teeth than swishing bleach will be without any of the drawbacks.
My suggestion–leave the bleach for your clothes and get your teeth done right.
Plus, don’t forget it says on the packaging it is a federal crime to use it for anything other than its intended purpose. If you’ve already ripped a tag off your mattress, you’re looking at two strikes. Don’t let your teeth put you on the road to a criminal lifestyle.
