I have Missing Teeth, can Dental Implants help restore my Smile?

Missing or broken teeth can wreak havoc on one’s self-esteem. In addition, there can be oral hygiene consequences if you have one or many missing teeth. It may even be difficult to force a smile out of fear of being judged by others. Dental implants are an excellent solution to correcting and enhancing imperfect smiles due to missing teeth. Experienced NYC cosmetic dentist, Dr. Marianna Farber with Contemporary & Esthetic Dentistry in New York, New York, uses dental implants on patients who want their smiles to have full potential. Patients are incredibly pleased with their new and improved smiles and with dental implants, they can smile from ear to ear without worry.

What are dental implants?

Think of a dental implant as an artificial root of the tooth. The implant bonds with your natural bone and become a secure base for the new tooth. A dental implant is surgically placed into a patient’s jawbone and the post(s) may be connected to a crown, bridge, or denture. Dental implants are an excellent, natural looking solution for patients who are missing teeth, or for those that need to have teeth replaced. They are a common solution for New York City men and women to address a missing tooth or large gap in the mouth so their mouth can look and function normal.

How do they work?

There are two types of dental implants that are commonly used today. Endosteal implants are placed in the bone, and are one of the most popular types of implants that dentists prefer to use. Each implant can hold one or more artificial teeth. This type of implant is typically used as an alternative for patients with bridges or removable dentures. The other common implant is a subperiosteal implant, which is placed on top of the bone with the metal framework posts protruding through the gums in order to hold the artificial teeth. These implants are designed for patients who are unable to wear conventional dentures and who have minimal bone in their jaws.

Why should I choose implants over other options?

Dental implants are secure, and you won’t have to worry about them slipping out of your mouth when you smile or talk. You can continue to eat your favorite foods and your speech or facial appearance will not be affected by the implants. Dental implants also preserve the natural bone and as an added bonus, they also stimulate bone growth.

Am I a good candidate?

If you’re missing one or more of your teeth dental implants may be an excellent solution for you. In order to be a good candidate for dental implants you must have enough bone in your jaw to support the implant. If your bone or gums are too soft or thin a graft may be necessary. It’s also very important that you have healthy gum tissues since implants are connected to both the gums and bone.

Dental implants are not recommended for younger patients as their bones are still growing. People who smoke are also not good candidates as cigarette smoke hinders the healing in the mouth which can cause the dental implant to fail. If you’re currently pregnant, have been diagnosed with any chronic conditions, or take certain medications it’s a good idea to discuss this with your dentist before deciding to move forward with dental implants.

What is recovery like?

Immediately following the surgery, patients have reported experiencing short-term inflammation in the mouth and lower face, along with discomfort, bruising and minor bleeding. This is all a normal part of recovery and Dr. Farber will go over what to expect during recovery and when to contact our office. While recovering from the surgery you should stop using any tobacco products and refrain from drinking alcohol. It’s also strongly advised that you stay away from hard foods and instead select softer foods that are easier to chew and are less likely to cause pain and discomfort during the healing process.

Recovery time from dental implant surgery can last anywhere from 2 to 6 months. One of the biggest factors in recovery time is the number of implant posts that have to be placed in your jaw. If you require a bone or gum graft in addition to the implants this can also impact your recovery time. Some patients also require the extraction of teeth prior to moving forward with dental implants.

It will take a few months for the implant to fuse to the jawbone and during that time a temporary crown can be placed on top of the implant. Once the implant has fully healed Dr. Farber will the move forward with permanent restoration. It’s important to stay on top of regular brushing and flossing and to come in for your cleanings and annual exams. Dr. Farber will use these appointments to evaluate the health of your mouth and check to see if the implants need any adjustments or modifications.
