I think my dentist is trying to scare me into doing another treatment, but want to double check before making a decision. I have a tooth that broke some years ago. He wanted me to put a crown on it, but the tooth didn’t bother me. A few months back, the tooth starting hurting a little. I didn’t think much about it. But, now there is a pain down my neck and up to my temple. I went to see the dentist about getting the crown. He thinks the tooth is too far gone and needs to be extracted. I told him, to just give me antibiotics and he said that it won’t help and if I don’t get this treated I could die. Is he just trying to scare me?
If your dentist is trying to scare you, it is for your protection. What he is saying is true. Dental infections, when left untreated, are life-threatening. Yours is spreading. Think about how close your teeth are to your heart, lungs, and brain. People still die from tooth infections even today when it is so preventable.
Sometimes patients mistakenly think preventative care is a waste of money, but it is actually the opposite. If a cavity is dealt with early on, it is barely an issue. As it is left, the cavity grows and eventually, you need a root canal treatment and / or a dental crown, which is more expensive. Then, if you don’t do that, it has to be extracted which also means you’ll need the tooth replaced. Doing what your dentist suggests early on, saves you money and hassle, though it is hard to believe that at the time.
My suggestion is you have this tooth pulled as quickly as possible. As I said before, yours is spreading. It has already made it to the temple. Please don’t put this off. I would consider it a dental emergency. You will want to replace the tooth after a suitable time of healing. The best tooth replacement is a dental implant, but there are less expensive ones if you need that. If you don’t replace the tooth, the other adjacent teeth will shift and tip into the open space, which will throw off your bite.
