Implant dentistry uses surgically placed metal posts in your jawbone to act like the root of the tooth. The post(s) may be connected to a crown, bridge, or denture for a beautiful restoration that can be cleaned like natural teeth. Implants can restore one or several lost teeth by connecting the implant to a crown, denture, or bridge. You may prefer implant dentistry if you have a removable or cemented dental restoration, but don't like the appearance, fit, or if there's special cleaning needed. Dental implants can be treated just like your normal teeth with daily flossing and brushing. At your consultation, Dr. Farber will evaluate the health of your jawbone and gums to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants. In some cases, a bone or gum graft surgery may be needed prior to implant surgery to strengthen your mouth. Dental implants may not be appropriate if you use tobacco products, are pregnant, or are being treated for another issue such as periodontal disease.
What To Expect
To prepare for your dental implants, you may need to have teeth extracted, as well as gum and bone grafts. Once Dr. Farber has determined that you are a candidate for dental implants, the implant will be placed by an experienced periodontist or oral surgeon. Once the dental implant has been placed below the gumline, it will take a few months for it to fuse with the jawbone. During the fusion process, a temporary crown can be placed on top of the implant. As the titanium post and the bone bond together, the implant acts like a strong tooth root. After fusion is complete, Dr. Farber will attach a customized permanent restoration.
There may be some short-term inflammation in your mouth and lower face, plus discomfort, bruising, and minor bleeding after your implant procedure. Dr. Farber will talk to you about what is to be expected and what should be reported to our office. She may also give you a prescription for pain relievers and antibiotics. After your dental implants are integrated and your restoration is connected, you should develop a good oral care routine at home that includes daily brushing and flossing. You should also schedule annual exams and bi-annual professional cleanings at Contemporary & Esthetic Dentistry so Dr. Farber can evaluate the health of your mouth and implants. She will talk to you if your restorations or implants should be adjusted, repaired, or replaced.
Based on your dental insurance company and personal coverage, part of the expenses of your implants and custom restoration might be paid for. We will contact your dental insurance company to understand your coverage and determine your personal cost. During your initial consultation with Dr. Farber, she may estimate your expenses and discuss payment methods our practice accepts, along with information on low-interest medical financing.
Implants with custom restorations may be a good option if you are looking for a replacement for missing teeth that is simple to care for and can last for many years. Dr. Farber will explain the steps needed starting with surgery for implant placement and your restoration options.
