If detected early on, tooth decay is addressed with a standard filling or something similar to remove the decay and close off the area. However, when the decay spreads beyond the outer tooth and affects the inner portion of the tooth, you will likely need a root canal. Often called an endodontic treatment, root canal therapy at Contemporary & Esthetic Dentistry removes the damaged pulp from the tooth, sanitizes the cavity, and then fills and seals the tooth. Dr. Marianna Farber may recommend a root canal to New York, NY individuals because it treats the infection and keeps the decay from moving to other teeth (creating a larger issue).
If you believe you could benefit from root canal therapy, we understand if you might have reservations about the procedure. Though root canals are a common dental treatment, patients often avoid going to the dentist to address tooth pain because of common dental fears. Dr. Farber and her staff make their best effort to help you feel at ease and comfortable, but we also provide a number of sedation options for any fear and anxiety you may experience. Contact Contemporary & Esthetic Dentistry to set up a consultation with Dr. Farber for more information on root canal therapy including your sedation methods.

An infection that reaches the pulp of your tooth may be the result of a cavity, a deep crack in the tooth, or a physical injury. The most obvious signs that you could have an infection are tooth pain and sensitivity, jaw pain, swollen and discolored gums, and discoloration of the affected tooth. If the infection is not addressed, it will spread, causing increased pain. Set up an appointment at Contemporary & Esthetic Dentistry right away if you feel or notice any changes in your mouth. If you have fears or anxieties about going to the dentist, don't hesitate to ask us about sedation dentistry to help you remain calm and at ease during your dental appointments.
What To Expect
Prior to the treatment, your anesthetic/sedation options will be discussed with Dr. Farber. We do not want you to feel nervous, anxious, or scared during your appointment. Some individuals ask for nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or oral-conscious sedation for a root canal. Dr. Farber is very sympathetic about dental fear, and will try to help you make the necessary decision about your sedation needs.
To perform an endodontic procedure, Dr. Farber will examine the innermost part of your tooth and extract the decayed pulp. Afterward, the inner chamber will be carefully cleaned to eliminate any lingering debris. To finalize the therapy, the tooth is filled with a dental filler to seal and protect it from further decay.
If the infection has not quite reached the inner tooth, pulp capping may be an alternative to a full root canal procedure in order to preserve the overall health of the tooth. For full root canal therapy, Dr. Farber will treat and sterilize the infected area, and place a dental crown over the natural tooth to add strength and support. This will also restore the natural look and feel of your teeth, enhancing both the function and aesthetic of the affected tooth.
Based on the method of sedation that was chosen, you might need to have an adult drive you home following your root canal. You should expect your mouth to feel tender or swollen, but these are normal symptoms and can be reduced with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications. We recommend that you set up a follow-up appointment about six months after your root canal procedure. Dr. Farber will examine the area to make sure the infection has been eradicated and that there is no cause for concern. Afterward, you should continue to schedule yearly dental checkups and twice-yearly dental cleanings to maintain your oral health.
At your consultation, Dr. Farber will give you cost estimates to align your treatments with your health needs and your budget. If you currently carry dental insurance, we will call your provider to figure out your benefits. If you do not have dental insurance, Contemporary & Esthetic Dentistry takes several payment methods and may be able to assist you in finding medical financing options.
