Am I a candidate for Invisalign?
While straight teeth are more in style than ever before, traditional metal braces are being seen less and less. Ever since Invisalign was created, patients have been flocking to their dentists to learn more about this revolutionary process so they can begin their journey to straighter teeth. Unlike clunky metal braces, Invisalign uses clear, removable trays that gently move teeth into alignment. The new Invisalign system is great for all the fashion-forward residents of New York City who don’t want braces detracting from the look of their fierce outfit. Dr. Marianna Farber is a cosmetic dentist located in NYC who offers Invisalign as an effective treatment for patients who want straighter teeth without the visibility of traditional braces.
Can I get Invisalign?
Invisalign is a great choice for older teens or adults who have their permanent teeth and want to fix a dental misalignment. Invisalign is recommended by NYC dentists to treat many common alignment issues including crooked teeth, gaps between the teeth, crowding, as well as overbites, underbites, and crossbites. Many patients choose Invisalign simply for the convenience factor since most people won’t know that you’re wearing them and they can be taken out for eating, cleaning, and special occasions. Patients prefer Invisalign over traditional braces because they are clear, discreet, and comfortable.
What can Invisalign not correct
While Invisalign can help with mild to moderate misalignment, it is usually not recommended for severe problems, like a significant overbite or large gaps. Your dentist will be able to assess your teeth to determine if Invisalign is the best option for you. It’s important to keep in mind that treating your teeth with Invisalign requires you to be responsible with the aligners. You will need to wear them most of the time (at least 20 hours a day), and you’ll also need to be extremely careful with where you store them. If you can’t keep track of the aligners or have to replace them often your treatment will get costly and this will also hinder your progress. Unlike traditional braces that are left on for your entire treatment, Invisalign requires more effort on your part since you must remember to wear the aligners as much as possible. Forgetting to wear your aligners will delay your progress as your teeth will take longer to move into their new position. If you are unwilling to commit to the time and upkeep involved with Invisalign, then you may want to consider other options.
How does Invisalign work?
In order to start your Invisalign treatment, digital molds must be made of your teeth. These molds are used to create your initial set of aligners. The aligners may be made for your top and/or bottom teeth depending on your needs. Every few weeks you will replace your aligners for new ones that will slowly shift your teeth into the correct position. Your dentist will periodically take new scans of your teeth to monitor your progress and to help create new sets of aligners. In order to get the most out of your treatment, you must wear the aligners as much as possible, only removing them to eat and brush your teeth.
What is the ongoing upkeep and maintenance like?
When compared to traditional braces, the upkeep with Invisalign is relatively easy. You don’t have to worry about rubber bands or the pain associated with the tightening of the brackets or wires like you would with braces. Brushing and flossing are simple. You simply remove the aligners to gain unobstructed access to your teeth. Another perk of Invisalign is that you can eat what you like since your food will not come in contact with the aligners. You should rinse your mouth and aligners before putting them back in. Every few weeks you will need to visit your dentist to see how your teeth are progressing. Your dentist will check to see if you’ve had any issues with your current aligners and determine if your teeth are ready for their next set of aligners. It’s important to follow your dentist’s advice and not wear a set of aligners too long or attempt to skip a set, as this will affect your progress and may extend your treatment time.
How long can I expect to wear them?
No treatment plan is the same, so the amount of time it takes to correct your teeth will vary from patient to patient. Multiple factors go into the treatment time including the amount and type of dental issues that need to be corrected, along with the number of aligners it will take for you to obtain desired results. On average, the treatment time can take anywhere from 12 to 18 months. You will have a much better idea of the treatment time after meeting with your dentist and having your digital molds made.
